About Us
Our History
The New Era restaurant has been in operation since 1928. Rade and Lucija Juric started this family owned business right after the depression. They named the restaurant the new era in hopes for better times. Lucija was an excellent cook and cooked homemade ethnic foods from Croatia and Serbia (former Yugoslavia). She founded the restaurant in order to provide quality meals at a reasonable price for the workingman and his family. The restaurant became very popular and since it was located right in the middle of the rubber capitol of the world, most business was fostered from Goodyear, Akron Standard and Mold, RCA Rubber Co., and Firestone to name only a few! After her husband passed away in the fifties, Lucija realized she needed help and she heard that she had a really hard working cousin in Croatia also named Lucija. She brought her cousin over and people nicknamed her Lou, (little did Lucija realize how hard of a worker she was, she is still at 93 years old working every day in the restaurant stretching homemade strudel and kifle cookies!) In 1982 Lucija asked Lou’s daughter and husband to take over the business since she was getting older and could not do it any longer. Milos and Mary Lekic along with their 4 children have been running the business for 39 years now. In 1986 Milos bought the property and in 2005 he built a brand new building at the same location seating 200 people, a lot bigger than the original that seated only 80 max. The restaurant has been known for its chicken paprikash and homemade strudel as well as for cabbage rolls, goulash and Serbian style sausage. They also serve American dishes such as fried chicken, burgers, steaks and spaghetti along with a very large menu. This website lists all our entrees, prices, pictures of our food, and facility. We are very proud of our great food and for serving Akron and surrounding areas for so many years! The restaurant business is a tough one but with our family work ethic and perseverance we have succeeded for many years providing quality food for our customers. We invite you to come in for some home cooking and dishes that you can’t find anywhere else, nostalgia, and good conversations with our family, our staff and of course our wonderful customers!
